Awareness of cheating in exams and especially of plagiarism is one of the key points in the assessment of exams in schools and universities around the world. So naturally, as providers of a digital exam and assessment software, we have pondered that exact question: how to prevent cheating and plagiarism in digital exams?

As examinations can take on both open and closed book formats, we set out to deliver solutions that provide the greatest measure of security for each of these scenarios.

Preventing Cheating in Exams with FLOWlock

As a preventive measure against cheating in exams, our platform enables FLOWlock during closed-book examinations. The locked-down browser (the FLOWlock) blocks all other applications on the examinee’s device, preventing the student from accessing any unauthorised information during the test.

This is a highly proactive method to run closed-book exams with a high degree of up-front security regarding the prevention of cheating during exams. The FLOWlock inhibits the students from doing anything other than conducting the exam on their computer - e.g. no access to other internet-based applications like Skype, Facebook, messenger etc.

Reactive Measures Against Cheating in Exams: Checking for Plagiarism

The FLOWlock is an excellent prevention against cheating during closed-book exams, but is often not a viable solution for open book exams, as students are allowed to use a broad range of different and undefined sources of information during these exams. As a security measure during open book exams, we apply a plagiarism checker. To provide you with the greatest defence against students copying material and plagiarising in their exams we have partnered up with URKUND, who offers one of the best fully-automated systems for handling plagiarism.

Detecting Plagiarism in Exams - How Does It Work?

In short, the system intercepts the exam en route from student to assessor. The handed-in documents are vigilantly compared against three central areas of information: the internet, previously published material, and the student's own previous material.Any similarities between these three sources and the submitted exam paper will result in the system flagging it for possible plagiarism. An analysis report of the flagged material is then generated, providing the information in a simple and easily reviewed format. This gives the assessor a great starting point for determining potential plagiarism.

Do We Have to Buy It Separately?

Excellent defence against plagiarism and cheating in exams and easily reviewable plagiarism reports for the assessor. Sounds great, but at what cost?

Simple - the FLOWlock and plagiarism-control system are fully integrated within the WISEflow platform, giving you both a seamless experience in assessing digital exams and a total price for the entire platform. This is your guarantee of no sudden surprises of extra expenditure or additional costs for add-on software when purchasing the WISEflow digital exam and assessment platform.
